Sinners Club Review @ Theatr Clwyd

The team from Egwyl returned to the theatre on the top of the hill to indulge in their newest production, Sinners Club.

If you’ve ever wondered what it is like to be inside an album then Sinners Club is probably the closest you can get!

In the production, the band, The Bad Mothers, are telling the tale of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the UK back in 1955 for shooting her lover, David Blakely.

Written and performed by the incredible Lucy Rivers and the band, Dan Messore on Guitar, Aidan Thorne on Bass and Tom Cottle on Drums, invite the audience into a live studio recording of their album that tells the story of Ruth, whilst sending them all into a rollercoaster of emotions. The 80-minute long show is guaranteed to have you laughing, gasping, all whilst at the edge of your seat awaiting the arrival of the next song.

The theatre was styled like a recording studio with mic stands, a ‘recording’ light, a sound booth with a vintage microphone and to top it all off, the room was surrounded with photos of the real-life Ruth Ellis and her partner. The atmosphere in the room was electric from start to finish.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and would definitely recommend it, so click here to grab some tickets, the show runs at Theatr Clwyd until Saturday March 18.

I spoke to an audience member, Sadie Williams, to hear her thoughts on the show: “It was a unique yet truthful piece about the story of Ruth. It was interesting how they talked about (…well sang about) the journey of her life, and who she was. The music was outstanding and got everybody engrossed in their seats. The subtle chit chat at the beginning and within the scenes got the audience wondering if it genuinely was improvised, but it turned out to just be very good actors! They went above the usual with the audience to really help them be involved. The standard of the musical and emotional talented within the group was outstanding. And it was nothing like I’d ever seen before! Would definitely recommend and would definitely see again”
